Carnival Royalty Takes Over Aruba
Carnival Royalty Takes Over Aruba
The final election of Aruba’s “Reina Grande” on Saturday night, February 19, filled the last slot for Carnival 57 royalty, with the traditional “take over” ceremony conducted at the government house the next morning.
All the queens, with their accompanying courtiers of Prins and Pancho, the court jester, paraded down L.G. Smith Boulevard yesterday morning to receive the keys to the island from Prime Minister Mike Eman. There are three sets of Prins and Pancho; Child, Youth and Adult.
This year, those selected by performing the most witty and entertaining comedy acts are: Child: Prince Ritmo – Ferdinand Bontekoe and Jester Alegria – Jadon Maduro, Youth: Prince Shon Bati – Jesmat Pantoba and Jester Compa Buli – Silvion Pardo, Adult: Prins Kwenta – Raymbert Bikker and Jester Ohm – Donovan Henriquez.
Prins Kwenta and Jester Ohm devise a proclamation with a new set of laws appropriate to the humor and spirit of the occasion which are presented to the Prime Minister and Tecla Kelly-Fernandez, the President of Stichting Arubaanse Carnaval-SAC-Aruba’s carnival administrators. It is a good natured bit of fun and a treasured tradition, symbolic of the carefree, hedonistic ambiance of Carnival.
